Coaching Youth Basketball Under 16 Clinic

The NYSCA Coaching Youth Basketball Under 16 Clinic is one of the most comprehensive resources for volunteer coaches involved in youth basketball. The unique video clips are designed to help you, regardless if you are new to the sport or have coached for many years, enhance both your knowledge and teaching skills so you are better prepared to guide every player on your team to a safe, fun and rewarding experience.

This clinic focuses on how to go about teaching basketball skills and drills for youngsters ages 16 and younger. The clinic features the following sections:

Warm-up – Jumping jacks and running laps around the basketball court aren’t part of an effective warm-up – and they’re boring for players! This section takes you through a great team warm-up that also enables the players to work on basketball skills at the same time.

Ball Handling – Being a good ball handler is important for all players, regardless of what position they play. This section delves into developing good ball handlers and teaching the importance of players changing speeds, levels and directions to maneuver past defenders with the dribble.

Passing – There are lots of ways for players to deliver the ball to their teammates. Here, you’ll learn how to teach players everything from the bounce pass when they’re looking to get the ball into the post to the overhead pass when they need the ball to travel a longer distance, among others.

Shooting – The more proficient your players are at shooting the ball the more fun they’ll have playing for you, and the more problems they’ll pose for opposing teams, too. This section addresses the fundamentals of shooting along with setting screens to help free up teammates for open shots.

Defense – Teaching good team defense is full of challenges since players must react to a variety of situations and make split-second decisions. This section makes your task that much easier, as it covers the principles of man-to-man defense, blocking out and grabbing those coveted rebounds.

After each video you must answer a set of review questions before continuing to the next section. Once you have watched each video and correctly answered all review questions you will have successfully completed the sports specific clinic.
